Perspective Is Everything

It’s TED Talk Tuesday on 350orbust, and Rory Sutherland the Ad Man is back. His message is essentially the same as in his 2009 TED Talk, but it bears repeating that our perception of an event or a circumstance is more important than the “reality”:

The circumstances of our lives may matter less than how we see them, says Rory Sutherland. At TEDxAthens, he makes a compelling case for how reframing is the key to happiness.

  1. A lot of what this chap says ties in with my belief that we shouldn’t vote for people to govern us,* we should instead have a system that enables us to vote for how the money we pay in taxes is actually spent. Then all we’d need is a cadre of sensible administrative folk who, over time, would hone their ability to administer our money in accordance with our collective wishes, instead of the present situation where we have a bunch of career politicians who, over time, gradually hone their skill in lying, misdirection and deception.

    * for various reasons, including a) we don’t really know the people we’re voting for b) we certainly don’t know what their ulterior motives are and c) they constantly promise things they never, ever, deliver.
